PALATINE, Ill. – The Harper College women's basketball team ran its winning streak to three games with a 66-61 victory over McHenry County College Tuesday night.
The Hawks (3-1) trailed 33-25 early in the second half but used a 26-5 run to take a commanding 51-38 lead. Harper's leading scorer Joslyn Nicholson (/Cary-Grove) (20 points, seven rebounds) fouled out with the 5:54 remaining, and the Scots (1-2) mounted a comeback behind the strong play of Robbie Holland (game-high 23 points).
Holland's 3-pointer with four minutes left cut the Harper lead to just one at 55-54, and McHenry took a 58-57 lead on a Kirstin Zanardo basket with 2:34 to play. Hawks guard Nastia Solsaa (/Menomonie ) provided an answer on the very next possession with a 3-pointer to put Harper back on top. After McHenry's Destiny Nash split a pair of free throws in to cut the Hawks' lead to 60-59, Ashonte Sims (/Normal Community West) and Solssa combined to go 6-of-6 from the line in the final 1:30 to preserve the victory.
Sims scored 15 points, and Solsaa played a solid all-around game with 13 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Kim Herzog (/Buffalo Grove) also scored in double figures with 10 points.
Harper looks to keep it going as they play at Moraine Valley Community College (1-1) at 5:15 PM on Thursday.
