OSHKOSH, Wis. – The Harper College wrestling team competed at the 12th Annual UW-Oshkosh Dan Gable Wrestling Open over the weekend. Three Hawks wrestlers – Zachery McCullough (/Elgin) (125 pounds) Kerin Ramirez (/Addison Trail) (141 pounds), and Blake Tisza (/Thornton Fractional South) (157 pounds) – earned individual titles at the meet.
McCullough and UW-Stevens Point's Michael Bannach were the only two wrestlers entered at 125 pounds, so they wrestled a round-robin match. McCullough picked up a 6-3 win in the first round, but Bannach bounced back with a 4-2 win in the second round, setting up a third and deciding round. McCullough won the final round 7-0 to capture the title.
Ramirez posted a 2-0 record at his weight class for the title. After a first round bye, Ramirez bested UW-Oshkosh's David Leisgang 17-5 to reach the final. In the final, Ramirez defeated teammate Matthew Conrad (/Barrington) by fall in 5:27.
Tisza navigated his way through a deep 17-man field at 157 pounds, going 5-0 en route to victory. He won his first match after his opponent was injured, and he bested Trevor Albert 15-4 to improve to 2-0. Tisza then dominated UW-Stevens Point's Tanner Goddard 15-3 and Mark Choinski 15-6 to reach the final. The sophomore earned a 9-2 victory over UW-Stevens Point's John Roycraft for the individual championship.
Other notable performances from Harper wrestlers included a second place finish for Lavontay Cobb (/King College Prep) at 197 pounds, third place for Dusan Bogicevic (/Larkin) at 133 pounds, third place for Corey Cross (/Thornton Fractional South) at 141 pounds, third place for David Perez (/Larkin) at 174 pounds, third place for Kameran Hardwick (/Lake Park) at 285 pounds, and fifth place for Steven Straka (/Glenbard South) at 165 pounds.
