Box Score PALATINE, Ill. – The Harper College men's basketball team took control from the opening tip against visiting Judson University JV on Tuesday night on the way to a 72-57 victory and first win of the 2014-15 campaign.
The Hawks (1-1) came out strong behind the sharp shooting of Admir Suljic (Chicago, Ill. /Lane Tech) (13 points in half) and a strong transition game. Leading 20-10, the Hawks went on an 8-0 run that featured transition baskets from Suljic and Dvonta Jones (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West). Abdul Mushtaq (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling)'s tip-in at the buzzer gave Harper a 40-21 edge at the break.
The Hawks built the lead up to 58-31 with just under 14 minutes to play, but the Eagles came roaring back with a 15-0 run capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers from Terrill May to cut the Harper lead to 58-46. Robert Hudson (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Conant) scored nine of the Hawks' next 10 points to push the lead back up to 20 at 68-48. Head coach Justin Welke was able to play 13 of his 15 players in the game.
Suljic led all scorers with 22 points, and Hudson added 18 points and seven rebounds. Marcus Gatlin (Chicago, Ill./Curie) scored nine points, Davion Benton (Chicago, Ill. /Alcott College Prep) chipped in seven points and nine rebounds, and Jamal Sherman (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) added seven. Justin Hill led Elgin in scoring with 12 points.
The Hawks play on the road at College of Lake County on Thursday at 7 PM.
