Box Score GLEN ELLYN, Ill. – The Harper College women's basketball team earned its first conference win of the season with a 66-58 victory at College of DuPage on Saturday evening.
Despite playing the final 4:06 with only four players after leading scorer Joslyn Nicholson (/Cary-Grove) became the second Hawk to foul out, the Hawks (7-12, 1-3 N4C) found a way to win. Leading 54-48 when Nicholson (26 points, 14 rebounds) fouled out, Harper got more clutch play from point guard Kim Herzog (/Buffalo Grove).
After two DuPage (6-12, 0-4 N4C) free throws cut the deficit to 54-50, Herzog scored eight of her team's final 12 points, including a big 3-pointer to put the visitors ahead 59-52. She finished the game with 16 points and eight assists. The Chapparals pulled no closer than within six after that point.
Lane Winkler (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) also played a key role for the Hawks with a career-high 18 points on 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc. Harper shot 40 percent (22-of-55) from the field and 70 percent (14-of-20) at the free throw line. The Hawks led 22-21 at halftime and took better care of the ball with 16 turnovers in the game.
Breanna Venson paced the Chapparals with 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Lauren Carroll added 17 points and six rebounds. DuPage shot 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the floor but an impressive 95 percent (19-of-20) from the foul line.
Harper travels to Joliet Junior College (14-6, 3-1 N4C) on Wednesday, Jan. 21 for a 5 PM tip with the Wolves.
