PALATINE, Ill. – The Harper College men's basketball team nearly took down Milwaukee Area Technical College on Saturday afternoon. It was the bench that proved to be the difference in the Stormers' 79-72 win over the Hawks inside the Wellness & Sports Center.
Milwaukee (17-4, 4-2 N4C), who is among others receiving votes for the NJCAA national poll, got 54 of its 79 points from the bench, led by Jabari Hobson's 17 points. Allante Washington and Austin Dunbar came off the bench to score 16 and 14 points, respectively, and Stormers leading scorer Melvin Brown scored 16 points.
Harper (8-14, 1-5 N4C) had four players score in double figures, led by Davion Benton (Chicago, Ill. /Alcott College Prep) with 20 points (7-of-9 shooting) and seven rebounds. Admir Suljic (Chicago, Ill. /Lane Tech) had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Dvonta Jones (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) had a career-best 14 points and six assists. Marcus Gatlin (Chicago, Ill./Curie) chipped in 10 points, and Robert Hudson (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Conant) scored eight.
The Hawks trailed 42-34 at halftime. Harper shot 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from the field while Milwaukee was slightly better at 49.1 percent (28-of-57).
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Madison College (12-6, 3-3 N4C) on Wednesday night for a 7:30 PM tip.
