Box Score 3 SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. – The Harper College volleyball team played at the South Suburban Quad on Saturday. The Hawks (29-12) won all three matches they played against some quality competition.
Harper vs. South Suburban College
Harper defeated the South Suburban Bulldogs in three sets in Saturday's 9 AM match, 26-24, 25-19, 25-14.
Defensively, Kayla Mayer (/Wauconda) played a solid match with a season-best 37 digs, while libero Meghan Chartier (Inverness, Ill./Buffalo Grove) collected 22 digs of her own. Setter Katelyn Sommers (/Buffalo Grove) had 39 assists to go along with 13 digs for her third double-double in as many matches. She was also 19-of-19 serving with two aces.
Middle hitter Sarah Berggren (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) was a perfect 28-of-28 hitting with 12 kills in the match. Middle hitter Daniele Sortino (Elk Grove Village, Ill. /Elk Grove) also reached double figures in kills with 10 and added two blocks.
"South Suburban has a very strong defense that caused us to run different plays than we normally run as we adjusted our way through this match," said Harper head coach Bob Vilsoet. "They did a nice job making us think."
Harper vs. Illinois Valley Community College
The Hawks played a close five-set match against the Illinois Valley Eagles back on Sept. 5. This time around, Harper got the best of the Eagles in four sets, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-14.
Sophomore Adriana Loiacono (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) led the team in kills with 13. Loiacono added 17 digs for her first double-double of 2015. She also was strong in the service game, going 19-of-22 with five aces.
Berggren matched Loiacono with 13 kills (18-of-19 hitting) while providing a team-best four blocks. Debra Miller (/Marian Catholic) also played strong defensively with 3.5 blocks to go along with eight digs. Mayer once again led the team in digs with 28 of the Hawks' 76 team digs.
Sommers notched another double-double with 11 digs and 48 assists.
Harper vs. Malcolm X College
Harper closed out the day with a straight-set win over the Malcolm X Hawks in the 1 PM match, 25-10, 25-10, 25-18.
Loiacono was the standout offensive player for the Hawks with 12 kills on 21-of-23 hitting in the match against a solid South Suburban defense. Loiacono also added three aces in the service game.
Sommers showcased her versatility on the court by performing well in the service game, setting her team up on the offensive end, and playing stout defense. Sommers was 13-of-15 serving with five aces to go along with a double-double of 12 digs and 24 assists. Defensively, Mayer led the team with 15 digs.
Up Next
The Hawks will go for their 30th win on Tuesday night at home against Milwaukee Area Technical College (5-14, 2-8 N4C). If they were to get the win, it would be the team's fifth straight 30-win season and eighth in the last 14 years.
Tuesday night is also Sophomore Night at Harper College. The six sophomores on this year's team will be honored for their contributions to the program. First serve against the Stormers is set for 6 PM inside the Wellness & Sports Center.
