Box Score 3 PALATINE, Ill. – The Harper College volleyball team hosted the Harper College Invite, an eight-team invite, on Saturday afternoon inside the Wellness & Sports Center. The Hawks (21-10) won their matches against Black Hawk College-Moline and Black Hawk College-East before losing a final match to Carl Sandburg College.
Harper vs. Black Hawk College-Moline
After losing its first set against Black Hawk, the Hawks won the next three sets for a victory over the Braves, 21-25, 25-19, 29-27, 25-21.
Middle hitters Daniele Sortino (Elk Grove Village, Ill. /Elk Grove) and Sarah Berggren (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) paced the attack with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Berggren also had 2.5 blocks. In the service game, the Hawks totaled 13 aces in the match, led by four from Hannah Moore (/Schaumburg), who was 18-of-19 serving. Moore also played a strong match defensively with a team-high 25 digs.
Setter Katelyn Sommers (/Buffalo Grove) once again posted an impressive double-double with 20 digs and 39 assists.
Harper vs. Black Hawk College-East
The Hawks needed only three sets to take care of the Black Hawk College-East Warriors, winning 25-11, 25-12, 25-13.
Sortino once again led the Harper offense with 13 kills, followed by 11 from Adriana Loiacono (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin). On the defensive end, Moore and libero Meghan Chartier (Inverness, Ill./Buffalo Grove) recorded 14 digs apiece, and Sortino had 2.5 blocks. Moore once again served a strong match, going 17-of-17 with two aces. Sommers guided the offense with 38 assists.
Harper vs. Carl Sandburg College
The 4 PM match on Saturday between Harper and the Carl Sandburg College Chargers came down to the wire in a deciding fifth set. The Hawks had four hitting errors that hurt them in the final set and lost the match, 25-13, 23-25, 25-17, 18-25, 15-17. Harper also committed 29 unforced hitting errors in the match.
Sommers had 43 assists in the match. Sortino and Berggren smashed 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Berggen also served a strong match, going 17-of-17 with two aces. Chartier eclipsed the 30-dig mark with an impressive 35-dig effort, and Moore and Jillian Hoffman (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) each totaled 20 digs.
Berggren and Sommers Named to All-Tournament Team
Middle hitter Sarah Berggren (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and setter Katelyn Sommers (/Buffalo Grove) were both named to the All-Tournament team at the Harper College Invite. This marks the second time the two were named to an All-Tournament squad this season, the other being at the Harper College Invitational held Sept. 18 and 19.
Berggren totaled 28 kills in the three matches. She also had 3.5 blocks and was 39-of-40 serving with three aces.
In three matches, Sommers totaled an incredible 120 assists to go along with 36 digs. She also was a perfect 37-of-37 from the service line with four aces and also tallied 16 kills.

This week, the Hawks will host Triton College in a N4C showdown on Tuesday at 6 PM. Harper will travel to Springfield for the Lincoln Land Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
