Box Score MALTA, Ill. – Facing its first road test of the 2015-16 season, the Harper College men's basketball team could not keep pace with a high-powered Kishwaukee College attack in the second half. The Kougars scored 60 points after the break to top the Hawks, 102-84.
The Hawks (1-1) kept pace with the Kougars (1-0) in the first half and trailed 42-37 at halftime. However, Kishwaukee opened up the second half with a 25-10 run in the first eight minutes to extend the advantage to 67-46. The hosts took their biggest lead of the game at 80-53 on a three-point play from Deon Merrill with 8:00 remaining.
Harper had plenty of offensive firepower in the game as Allias Burnett (Joliet, Ill. /Joliet West) scored a game-high 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Burnett also knocked down 10-of-13 free throws. Mike Calhoun (Chicago, Ill./Roberto Clemente) scored 18 points, and point guard Marcus Gatlin (Chicago, Ill./Curie) scored 14 points and dished out seven assists. Connor Elzerman (Oxford, Mich./Oxford) also scored in double figures with 12 points.
For Kishwaukee, it was a balanced attack that worked wonders. Nine Kougars players scored six or more points, led by 14 points apiece from Koko Songolo and JaJuan Cosby. Kishwaukee shot 63.9 percent from the floor in the second half and 52 percent (39-of-75 for the game).
Harper shot 39.7 percent (27-of-68) for the night and 74.3 percent (26-of-35) from the free throw line.
The Hawks return to the court on Saturday night at Robert Morris University in Arlington Heights. Tipoff is set for 7 PM.
