Box Score PALATINE, Ill. – Trailing 58-50 with 8:04 to play, the Harper College men's basketball team went on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes and held off visiting College of Lake County for a 65-63 victory.
The Lancers (6-7) grabbed their biggest lead of the game on a Jake Parmley layup with just over eight minutes to play, but Harper (8-7) sophomores Allias Burnett (Joliet, Ill. /Joliet West), Marcus Gatlin (Chicago, Ill./Curie), and Abdul Mushtaq (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) provided an answer. Layups from Burnett and Gatlin cut the deficit in half to 58-54 with 5:17 to play. Gatlin came away with a steal on the next possession and was fouled. He knocked down both free throws to close to 58-56 with 4:58 left.
On the next trip down the court, Mushtaq buried a three to give the Hawks their first lead since the 18:50 mark in the second half. Burnett pushed the Harper lead to 61-58 on a layup with 3:59 left.
Alexio Ramirez knocked down a three for Lake County to tie the game at 61-61, but Maurice Brown (/Richards Career Academy) and Connor Elzerman (Oxford, Mich./Oxford) stepped up their game for the Hawks. Both freshmen knocked down jumpers to give Harper a 65-61 with 1:08 left.
Lancers point guard Jordan Taylor (game-high 25 points, eight assists) scored a layup with 51 seconds left to cut the deficit to two, but those were the last points scored in the game. Ramirez had a chance to tie the game with six seconds left but could not convert.
Brown came up with a big rebound and was send to the foul line. He missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving College of Lake County one last chance. Taylor's heave at the buzzer from half court missed, giving Harper back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Gatlin led the Hawks with 23 points (11-of-13 free throws) while Burnett (13 points) and Elzerman (12 points) both reached double figures in scoring. Harper shot 40 percent (22-of-55) from the floor. Lake County shot 36.9 percent (24-of-65) and outrebounded the Hawks 40-28.
The Hawks will not be in action again until the calendar turns to 2016. Harper hosts Elgin Community College on Monday, Jan. 4 at 7 PM inside the Wellness & Sports Center.
