PALATINE, Ill. – Clinging to a 57-54 lead over visiting Triton College with five minutes to play, the Harper College women's basketball team closed the game on 13-0 run for a 70-54 conference victory Wednesday night inside the Wellness & Sports Center.
It was Hawks' leading scorer Joslyn Nicholson (/Cary-Grove) who took over late in the second half. After Triton (3-22, 2-7 N4C) leading scorer Candace Madison (team-high 19 points) scored on a layup to make it 57-54, Nicholson scored on a driving layup and jumper on the next two Harper (8-15, 2-6 N4C) possessions to push the lead back to seven. Her layup with 1:44 to play put the Hawks up nine, and her three-point play with 18 seconds remaining put the exclamation point on a monstrous 38-point, 15-rebound performance.
Nicholson had plenty of help from her teammates as well, as Ashonte Sims (/Normal Community West) posted a double-double of her own with 14 points and 10 rebounds, five of which were offensive. Point guard Kim Herzog (/Buffalo Grove) posted 10 points, six rebounds, and six assists in the win. Lane Winkler (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) pitched in six points and nine rebounds.
The Hawks dug themselves out of a 25-13 deficit with in the first half with a potent offensive attack to take a 43-37 lead into the break. They took the lead for good at 38-37 at the 2:02 mark in the first half on a Nicholson jumper, a lead they would never relinquish.
The 70 points scored matched a season-high for Harper, last accomplished against Oakton Community College in a 70-65 win back on Dec. 9, 2014.
The Hawks are on the road Saturday as they square off with Wilbur Wright College (6-17, 2-7 N4C) at 1 PM.
