PALATINE, Ill. – Harper College wrestlers Blake Tisza (/Thornton Fractional South) and Donte Winfield (/Perry Meridian ) won individual championships at the Harper Open on Saturday, and several other Hawks had impressive showings.
Tisza won his first two matches by fall and then defeated teammate Matt Kitsis (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) in the finals at 157 pounts. Kitsis reached the finals with two victories of his own. Winfield conquered the heavyweight division with a 3-0 record, capped off by a 7-2 victory over UW-Parkside's Matt Stopka in the finals.
At 125 pounds, Jacob Bellis (/Bloomington) finished runner-up as he posted a 3-1 record. Bellis won by fall in his first two matches and took the third match, 17-2, over Triton's Anthony Pascente to reach the finals. Northern Illinois' Alijah Jeffery got the better of Bellis in the finals, 13-4. At 141 pounds, Kerin Ramirez (/Addison Trail) also posted a 3-1 record for runner-up honors. He won his first two matches convincingly and the third match by fall to reach the title match, where he was taken down by Northern Illinois' Chris Garcia.
Sean Dulom (/Sarasota) finished second at 149 pounds with a 2-1 mark. Greg Jacquez (/West Aurora) reached the championship match at 165 pounds before losing to Northern Illinois' Austin Repp and settling for second place. Jonathan Denikas (/Antioch) reeled off third straight victories at 174 pounds but settled for second place as he lost a championship bout with UW-Parkside's James Lehman.
Dusan Bogicevic (/Larkin) posted a 3-1 record at 133 pounds, taking third place. His victories came in convincing fashion (Maj 16-4, TF 15-0, Fall), and his only loss was to eventual champion Casey McWhirter of North Central.
The Hawks return to the mats on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 9 AM for the Midwest District Championship at Triton College.
