Hawks Prevail in Three Tough Sets over Chaparrals

PALATINE, Ill. – The Harper College volleyball team played host to N4C foe College of DuPage on Tuesday night. The Hawks improved to 12-4 and 3-0 in the N4C with a three-set victory (25-22, 25-20, 32-30) over the Chaparrals (3-4, 2-2 N4C), but it did not come easy with several long rallies in the match.

"This was a well-played match by both teams. College of DuPage has improved greatly since last time we played them," said Harper head coach Bob Vilsoet.

The first set was close throughout. Tied at 20-20, Harper finally pulled ahead for a 25-22 victory. Shannon Igielski (Streamwood, Ill/St. Edward) and Sarah Berggren (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) each paved the way with four kills while setter Katelyn Sommers (/Buffalo Grove) set them up with 10 assists. Defensively, Hannah Moore (/Schaumburg) and Kayla Mayer (/Wauconda) tallied nine digs apiece in the set.

The Hawks maintained the lead throughout a close second set on the way to a win. Adriana Loiacono (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) moved from left side to right side and led Harper with five kills, and Daniele Sortino (Elk Grove Village, Ill. /Elk Grove) added four. Sommers recorded another 11 assists while Mayer paced the defense with seven digs.

Harper looked to close out DuPage in the third set and had a late 24-22 lead, but the Chaparrals scored two points in a row to tie it at 24-24. The two teams continued trading points until 30-30. Harper scored the final two points to win 32-30 and end the match.

Sortino had another four kills for a match-high 10 kills for the Hawks while Sommers had 12 assists to give her 33 assists in the match. Chartier played solid defense with 10 digs in the set and 22 digs in the match.

Mayer led Harper with 23 digs for the match. Berggren was an impressive 9-of-10 serving with three aces in the set, and 17-of-18 in the match. Loiacono was one kill short of a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs in the match.

Up next for fourth-ranked Harper is a road trip to No. 5 Rock Valley College (9-2, 3-0 N4C) on Thursday night. First serve is slated for 6 PM in Rockford between two top-five teams in the NJCAA poll.
