CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. – The Harper College volleyball team ran into a tough McHenry County College squad on Thursday evening. The Scots defeated the Hawks in three sets, 25-15, 25-23, 25-14.

The Hawks (5-3) trailed the Scots (12-3) throughout the first set. McHenry lead 14-10 and closed the set on an 11-5 run on the way to a victory.

Harper started out behind 10-3 in the second set but fought hard to close the gap to 18-17 before missing another serve. The resilient Hawks tied at 23-23, but the Scots scored the final two points to go ahead 2-0 in the match.

The Hawks' lineup changes in the third and final set weren't enough as they fell into a big hole on the way to a 25-14 loss.

Second-year outside hitter Shannon Igielski (Streamwood, Ill/St. Edward) paced the Harper offense with seven kills. Katelyn Sommers (/Buffalo Grove) posted a double-double of 13 digs and 16 assists while also going 14-of-14 from the service line with three aces.

"McHenry played very well in this match. They have several good hitters, strong blocking, good setting, and excellent defense," said Harper head coach Bob Vilsoet.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday at the Illinois Valley Tri-Match. Harper plays host Illinois Valley Community College at 10 AM, followed by Millikin University JV at noon.
