Hawks Look To Bounce Back With Home Matchups Against Chaparrals

The Harper College Women's basketball team is looking for its fourth win of the season on Jan.11. (Jim Summaria)

Palatine, Ill- After dropping two straight contests, the Harper College men's basketball team looks to bounce back with a home contest against College of DuPage on Jan. 11. The women also look to get back on track after falling to Rock Valley on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off for the women will be at 5PM followed by the men at 7PM on Jan. 11.

The Chaparral women (3-8) are coming off their biggest win of the season defeating Wilbur Wright College 57-24. They also boast wins against Oakton Community College and Olive Harvey College on the season. If the Hawks hope to win they will have to slow down the Chaparral's leading scorer, Ana Jovanvic, who averages a little less than 16 points per game.

The Hawks also are 3-8 on the season and have won two out of their last three games. Harper has defeated Wilbur Wright College, Elgin Community College, and Olive Harvey College (forfeit). The Hawks have been led all season by Tamara Zivak (/Barrington) and Angelina Villasin (/Prospect). In fact, in Saturday's loss to Rock Valley the two combined for all 41 Harper points. Coincidentally, both average 17.1 points a game. Zivak also cleans the glass for the Hawks averaging just shy of ten rebounds a game (9.7). Villasin has distributed all season for Harper averaging over five assists (5.1) per contest.

The Harper College men's basketball team was shocked last Wednesday when previously no-win Wilbur Wright College came to Palatine and beat the Hawks. If there were any questions about the strength of the N4C before that night they were quickly answered by the upset. Then, Harper headed to Rockford to square off with defending national champion Rock Valley. The Hawks had an early lead in the contest, but the hosts were too much in the end cruising to a 113-83 victory.

Still, the Hawks look to make a competitive run in the conference and look to get rolling against a struggling College of Dupage squad (1-13). The lone Chaparral win on the season was against Wilbur Wright College just two days ago. It was a close one, with College of Dupage edging the Rams by three points, 68-65. The Chaparrals are led in scoring by sophomore forward, Sean Davis, averaging over 15 points per contest (15.1).

Second half newcomer, Isaiah Butler (/Elgin) has been on a tear for the Hawks in his three contests this season. He will head into Wednesday's contest averaging 27 points per game. In general, Harper has not been shy from behind the arc. They are averaging over twenty threes a game and have shot 49, 28, and 29 in their last three games, respectively. If the Hawks look to get back on track they will have to shoot a better percentage from deep as they have converted on less than 30 percent in their last three games.
