PALATINE, IL- The #1 ranked Harper College women's volleyball team hosted #2 Madison College on Tuesday in a rematch of one of the best matches of the year earlier in the season. The Hawks defeated the WolfPack in four sets.
As has been the case most of the season, the Hawks got out to a hot start, seeing leads of 4-1, 7-2, and 11-6 before Madison called a time-out. After the break, the Hawks kept up the scoring and won the first set 25-15.Â
Ellie Burzlaff (Elgin/Harvest Christian Academy),
Marielle Lugo (Hoffman Estates/Hoffman Estates), and
Sarah Udoni (Palatine/Palatine) each had 3 kills. Burzlaff filled the stat sheet in the set also totaling 4 digs and 7-7 serving.Â
Ariana Chelini (Crystal Lake/Crystal Lake South) went 6-6 and also had 6 digs to lead the team.
The second set was very similar to the first as the Hawks once again got ahead early 5-1 and 7-2. After a 16-9 lead, Madison called another time-out. The Hawks responded well and took the first three points after the timeout on their way to a 25-17 set two win. Burzlaff led the Hawks again, this time with 6 kills and Udoni had another 3.Â
Breanna Cullen (Chana/Oregon) led the Hawks on defense with 8 digs.
Set three had a different feel from the beginning as both teams were tied early 3-3 and 4-4. The Hawks then found themselves behind after the WolfPack had 5 straight points and Harper called a timeout. After the stoppage in play, the Hawks could not break out to cover the five point deficit and ended up losing the third set 14-25. Burzlaff had another 4 kills while Cullen had 3.Â
Ariana Chelini (Crystal Lake/Crystal Lake South) stayed tough on the defensive end with 11 digs in the set.
The Hawks set out to show that the third set was a little bit of anomaly and started out strong in set four with a quick 5-0 lead behind
Emily Huprich (Elgin/Elgin)'s serving. Chelini then took over and brought the Hawks ahead 15-3. Harper would go on to lead the rest of the way and won set four 25-13, winning the match.Â
Marielle Lugo (Hoffman Estates/Hoffman Estates) and
Breanna Cullen (Chana/Oregon) led the team with 3 kills while
Sarah Udoni (Palatine/Palatine) was a force at the net with 2 kills and 2.5 blocks.Â
Karolina Sas (Palatine/Fremd) got involved on the defensive side, contributing 6 digs.
Ellie Burzlaff (Elgin/Harvest Christian Academy) finished the match with a double-double (14 kills, 10 digs) while
Emily Huprich (Elgin/Elgin) (9 digs, 37 assists) and
Breanna Cullen (Chana/Oregon) (8 kills, 20 digs) just missed making the club. The Hawks are now 11-0 in the N4C and clinched the conference title. Next up, the Hawks host the MATC Stormers on Thursday for Sophomore Night.
