Harper Finishes Regular Season with Sweep

PALATINE, IL-  On Tuesday, the Hawks had their last match of the regular season as they traveled to DII Moraine Valley and came back with a win in straight sets.

The first set was close from the start as the teams were tied at 1-1, 3-3, 4-4, 7-7, 8-8, and 9-9 before Harper got on a hot streak and went ahead 21-12.  After extending the lead to 23-15, Moraine Valley took a timeout.  Following the break in action, the Cyclones put on a streak of their own but the Hawks were able to hold them off for a 25-21 win.  Ellie Burzlaff (Elgin/Harvest Christian Academy) and Breanna Cullen (Chana/Oregon) led the offensive attack with 6 kills each while sophomore setter Emily Huprich (Elgin/Elgin) had 16 assists.

Set two saw the Hawks jump ahead to an early 4-0 lead before the Cyclones once again climb back into the game and tied it 7-7.  Harper was able to move the score to 16-12 before a Moraine Valley timeout.  The Hawks would stay in control for the remainder of the set and won 25-18.  Burzlaff led the Hawks with 5 kills but everyone seemed to get invovled as Sarah Udoni (Palatine/Palatine) had 3 kills while Gabby Fugle (Island Lake/Wauconda), Marielle Lugo (Hoffman Estates/Hoffman Estates), and Cullen each had 2.  Huprich kept up the teamwork, finishing the second set with 14 assists.

Another early lead disappeared in set three as the Hawks started ahead 4-1.  However, Moraine Valley scored the next 5 points and Harper found themselves trailing for the first time in the match 4-6.  The two point deficit would stay until Harper would go onto a 5 point streak of their own for a 13-10 lead.  After regaining the lead, Harper stayed ahead the rest of the way for a 25-16 win.  The three-set win gave the Hawks their 20th sweep of the season.  Breanna Cullen (Chana/Oregon) and Sarah Udoni (Palatine/Palatine) had 4 kills each while Fugle and Burzlaff chipped in 3.  Emily Huprich (Elgin/Elgin) kept placing the ball where she wanted for another 15 assists.  Huprich finished the three-set match with 45 assists, tying the school record that has been held since 2006.

The Hawks had three players finish with double-doubles in the match.  Emily Huprich (Elgin/Elgin) had 45 assists and 10 digs, Breanna Cullen (Chana/Oregon) had 12 kills and 12 digs, and Ellie Burzlaff (Elgin/Harvest Christian Academy) had 14 kills and 10 digs.  Harper finishes the season 33-5 and begins post season play this weekend.  The NJCAA Division III Region 4 Semifinals take place at 10 against the winnter of Rock Valley and Joliet Junior College.
