Hawks Soar Over Owls

Box Score PALATINE, IL-  The Harper College women's basketball team traveled to Oakton to take on the Owls in Des Plaines on Tuesday and finished the day with a 63-43 victory.

Freshman Kaela Drum got the scoring started for the Hawks with back to back baskets in the first minute of the game.  The Owls would answer with their first field goal a minute later but the Hawks' defense would only allow them to score twice more in the first quarter.  Ashley Shapiro and Drum combined for 14 of the Hawks' 19 first quarter points.

To start the second quarter, the Hawks would once again strike first, this time on a jumpshot by Carrie Kerlin to make the score 22-7 in Harper's favor.  Maggie O'Donnell would give Harper their first three pointer of the day when she connected from deep with 7:30 to go in the half.  However, the Hawks would go on a scoring drought after a Mikayla Drake hook shot with 3:22 left.  The drought would allow Oakton to cut into their deficit as Harper went into the break with a 29-18 lead.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, the lack of scoring would continue but Oakton was unable to take advantage as they went cold on the offensive end as well.  With the Hawks up 29-22, Drum put an end to the Hawks' 8 minute drought with a layup under the hoop.  The basket proved to be a spark the Harper offense needed as Drum, Shapiro, and O'Donnell hit three consecutive field goals to make the score 40-22.  Drake and Kathryn Pielmeier would then make back to back shots but Oakton answered back as the third quarter ended with a 44-27 Harper lead.

Both teams would save their highest scoring for the last quarter of the game.  Each team essentially traded baskets back and forth for the first 5 minutes of the fourth before the Hawks' defense was able to put together a string of stops and take advantage on the offensive end.  The trio of Drum, O'Donnell, and Shapiro combined to score 16 of the Hawk's final 19 points on the way to a 63-43 victory.

Freshman Kaela Drum had her best game of the season as she finished with a double-double and totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds.  Maggie O'Donnell and Ashley Shapiro each chipped in 16 points.

The Hawks (2-3) will travel to Concordia University-Chicago on Saturday to take on their JV team.  Tip-off is scheduled for 3pm.
