Hawks Let Early Lead Slip, Fall to COD

Box Score PALATINE, IL-  The Harper College men's basketball team hosted the COD Chaparrals on Wednesday in a matchup of two teams looking to get their first win in conference play.  The Hawks would ultimately fall short in the 67-59 loss.

Harper got started on the right foot as a Jesse Young free throw gave the Hawks an early lead.  5 minutes into the half, the Hawks would extend the lead to 9-3 after Sean Richardson got an offensive rebound and fed Corin Daniel with a no look pass for a layup.  A three pointer by Young with 13 minutes to go gave the Hawks a 10 point lead as they used a combination of strong defense and good shot selection for the early lead.  However, the Hawks would go cold and were outscored by COD 24-8 for the remainder of the half and found themselves trailing by 4.  After the quick start, Harper went into the half shooting 31% compared to COD's 44%.

The Hawks continued to battle at the beginning of the second half, staying within a reachable 8 points, while getting the deficit as low as 3 points with 8:35 to play.  However, COD would go on a 9-0 run in the next 3 minutes as the Hawks had 3 turnovers and two missed free throws during the run.  Harper would not go down quietly as they were able to get the deficit down to 7 points with 1:26 remaining, but it was too late as they had to start fouling.  As the dust settled, the Hawks fell 67-59.

The Hawks' shooting improved to 42% for the second half, but their 11 turnovers and 7 missed free throws turned out to be a difference maker for the game.  Jesse Young led all scorers with 28 points while adding on 11 rebounds for his 6th double-double of the year.

The Hawks (2-16, 0-2 N4C) find themselves in a 9-game losing streak as they travel to play the Triton Trojans on Saturday,  Tip-off is scheduled for 3pm.
