Short-Handed Hawks Hang Tough

Box Score PALATINE, IL-  The Harper College women's basketball team traveled to Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday looking for revenge on a January 13 loss against the WolfPack.  Despite only having five players for the game, the Hawks hung in there but ultimately fell 82-53.

The short-handed Hawks played even with the WolfPack for the first few minutes before Madison created a little breathing room.  Harper was more or less able to handle the Madison full-court press, as they broke through for a few easy baskets during the first half.  However, that constant pressure took a toll on the Hawks as missed layups and turnovers allowed Madison some fastbreak points of their own.  At the end of the first half, the Hawks were down 48-32 and shot 54.5% from the floor in comparison with Madison's 41.7%.  The difference was in total shots, as the Hawks were only able to get off 22 to the WolfPack's 48.

Harper was able to make a few adjustments on both sides of the ball in the second half and forced Madison to call a couple of timeouts to go over the changes.  After breaking the press, the Hawks used effective ball movement to find the open players in the paint or elbows, spreading the floor better than they have since early in the year.  Harper once again shot a very effective 47.6% and held Madison to 31.6% in the second half.  However, when the final buzzer sounded, the Hawks found themselves on the wrong side of the 82-53 score.

Ashley Shapiro continued her strong season and led all scorers with 22 points on 9-18 shooting.  Freshman Kaela Drum made the most of her looks as she went 8-14 from the field with a career-high 19 points while adding 7 rebounds.  De facto point guard Sydney Heinrich added 7 points and 3 assists while running the offense.

The Hawks are now 7-19 on the season and 4-8 in the N4C.  Harper will host the Joliet Junior College Wolves on Tuesday at Robert Morris in Arlington Heights.  In their first meeting, the Hawks trailed by 1 at half but fell apart after the break, eventually falling 90-64.
