Hawks Bounce Back with Sweep of COD

Box Score PALATINE, IL-  The #8 ranked Harper College volleyball team traveled to Glen Ellyn to take on the College of DuPage Chaparrals on Tuesday.  The Hawks ended their five-match losing streak with a three-set sweep.

The Hawks continued the unfortunate trend of slow starts as they fell behind early 0-3.  After coming back to tie the set 3-3 and 6-6, Harper was able to build a slim 2-point lead until it was the Chaparrals' turn to tie the set.  After a 14-14 tie, the Hawks gained some breathing room and took advantage the rest of the way for a 25-16 win.

The score in set two does not tell the whole story as the set was tied at 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 11 before Ella Roland (Elgin/Larkin) went on an incredible streak of 14 consecutive serves giving the Hawks a 25-11 victory.

The third set started like the previous as there were 3 early ties before the Hawks fell behind 7-9.  Roland checked into the game with the hopes of providing the same spark and she did not disappoint, scoring 5 service points to put the Hawks ahead 12-9.  However, COD would come back again for 4 more ties until the Hawks finished off the sweep with a 25-22 win in the third set, thanks to Mackenzie Bush (Bartlett/Bartlett) finishing off the last 3 points for Harper.

Mackenzie Bush (Bartlett/Bartlett) led the team with 10 kills while Gabby Fugle (Island Lake/Wauconda) chipped in 9 of her own.  Roland was a perfect 24-24 serving and also notched 3 of Harper's 6 aces.  Fugle had a team-high 3 blocks.  Karolina Sas (Palatine/Fremd) and Carlene Colton (Lake in the Hills/Huntley) tied for the team lead with 13 digs.  Kayla Agoranos (Hampshire/Hampshire) recorded a double-double with 12 digs and 29 assists.

Head coach Bob Vilsoet was happy with the way the Hawks performed saying "Harper played well tonight!  We welcomed back Carlene Colton (Lake in the Hills/Huntley) (who had missed the previous five matches).  Kayla Agoranos (Hampshire/Hampshire) sure did a nice job setting while Kathleen (Gueco) was out."

The Hawks moved their record to 9-7 overall and 3-1 in N4C play.  Harper will be in action again on Thursday as they play host to the Elgin Community College Spartans.  The match is scheduled to begin at 6pm.
