Bryant & Stratton wins Rematch

Box Score

Harper College lost to Bryant and Stratton  21-25, 18-25, 25-21, 20-25

Wednesday, October 9, 2016, 6:00 p.m. at Harper College

Palatine, IL:  A very strong Bryant and Stratton came to Harper College.  Bryant and Stratton is in the same Region as Harper College, but a different division.  Going into tonight's match, Bryant and Stratton was 13-3 in the region, and Harper College was 9-1 in the region.  Harper's only Region loss was earlier this year to this same Bryant and Stratton team while at the Rock Valley Invitational on September 14, 2019.

This is the rematch.

Set 1 was very close with tie scores at 3-3, 5-5, 11-11, 13-13, 14-14, and 18-18, when Bryant and Stratton pulled away with 3 points on a couple Harper errors to make the score 18-21… and thus, Harper lost the 1st set 21-25.  This set was very well played by both teams.  Harper had just 6 hitting errors but that was enough, as Bryant and Stratton had JUST 1 hitting error….  Rachel Kandefer (/Elk Grove H.S.) was in great form with 6 kills on 7 attacks.  Ashley Rothenberg (/Streamwood H.S.) had 4 kills and a block. Rugile Jaciunas (/Wheeling H.S.) also had 4 kills and a block.  Setter Taylor Pfaller (/St. Viator) had 15 assists in this back and forth set.  Libero Jules Carusiello (/Hersey H.S.) had 6 digs.

In the second set, Bryant and Stratton pulled away with leads of 9-13 and 12-16 on the way to a 19-25 Harper loss.  Harper College had only 7 kills in the entire set.  Bryant and Stratton had 13 kills.  This time, Kayla Agoranos (/Hampshire H.S.) had 6 digs.

The third set was another one of those close sets the entire way… there were ties at 4-4, 5-5, 9-9, 14-14, 15-15, 18-18, 19-19 and 20-20.  Harper took a 2-point lead on 2 serves from Jules Carusiello (/Hersey H.S.), including an ace that dribbled over the net.  Harper led 23-20, and 24-21 on the way to the 25-21 win.  Taylor Pfaller (/St. Viator) had 13 assists.  Rugile Jaciunas (/Wheeling H.S.) got hot with 6 kills on 7 attempts.  Amelia Reiter (/Crystal Lake South H.S.) had 3 kills on 5 attacks.  Kayla Agoranos (/Hampshire H.S.), playing libero had 7 digs.  Taylor and Amelia were 5-5 serving with 1 ace each.

The final set was well-played and close again… ties at 3-3, 4-4, 8-8, 9-9, 11-11, 13-13, 14-14 and 15-15, when Harper missed a serve and the momentum.  A patient and relatively error-free Bryant and Stratton team took a 3-point lead at 17-20 on the way to the 20-25 win.  Rugile Jaciunas (/Wheeling H.S.) had 4 more kills for a Harper high of 16 kills for the match.  Rachel Kandefer (/Elk Grove H.S.) had 4 more kills and a block.  Amelia Reiter (/Crystal Lake South H.S.) was 7-7 serving with an ace.

This was a very well-played high-level match.  For Harper, this was simply a well-played loss.  Bryant and Stratton stats showed 57 kills in 4 sets.  Harper had 60 digs.  Passing was 20%, hitting was 22%, serving was just 38% efficiency, but 92% in play;  2.25 blocks/set and 5 aces in 4 sets.  And Harper had 46 assists (11.5 kills/set), and 47 kills (11.75 kills/set).  These are generally pretty strong stats; just a loss.  Harper's 47 kills is the second highest kill total this year (52 kills v Black Hawk @ COD on 8/30/2019).
