Harper went 3-1 at the Joliet Invitational this weekend.

D3 #3 Harper College lost to Kaskaskia 18-25, 20-25, 22-25

Joliet, IL 9/11/2021:  In the first set, Harper fell behind early at 2-6.  Harper continued to track behind by 4 points… 4-8, 5-9, 8-12, but called a timeout at 8-13.  Kaskaskia extended the lead to 10-16 on the way to kind of a bad error prone 18-25 loss.  Patricia Wadas (/Hoffman Estates) led Harper with 3 kills.  Harper had 8 hitting errors in this set.  Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) led Harper with 7 digs.  Jules Carusiello (/Hersey H.S.) had 6 digs.  Alyssa Rodda (/Barrington) was 7-7 serving with 2 aces.
 
In the second set, the score was tied at 4-4, 5-5, and 7-7, before Harper fell behind by the typical 4-point margin at 8-12… Kaskaskia continued to extend the lead to 13-18, 15-20 and finally a 20-25 loss for Harper.  Vicky Gorny had 4 kills on 7 attacks, but Harper had 7 hitting errors in this set.  Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) added 5 more digs. 

In the third and final set, the score was tied at 5-5.  Harper fought hard and led 9-6 and 12-9 before Kaskaskia tied the score at 16-16, 17-17 and 18-18.  Harper took a brief and encouraging lead to 20-18, only to see Kaskaskia knot the score again at 20-20… and 21-21 before Harper fell behind 21-24 and then lost 22-25 to end the match.  Vicky Gorny had 5 kills, and Rugile Jaciunas (/Wheeling H.S.) and Katie Hofmann (/Elk Grove) each had 3 kills.  Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) was 10-10 serving with 3 aces in this close defeat.
 
Coach Bob Vilsoet said, "I felt we didn't play especially well. We were error prone, but I fell like we lost to the best team in the tournament."

D3 #3 Harper College defeated Southwestern Illinois College 25-16, 22-25, 25-12, 26-24 

All was good in the first set as Harper took leads of 4-1 and 17-10 on the way to a well-played 25-16 win.  Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) and Vicky Gorny each had 3 kills and a block.  Taylor Pfaller (/St. Viator) was 7-9 serving with an ace.

The second set went a different direction. The score was even at 6-6. Harper had leads of 15-13 and 20-17 before Southwestern Illinois College tied the score at 20-20.  Harper lost a point when the refs missed a touch call to make it 20-21.  Refs missed another touch call to make it 20-22. Harper landed in the net to make the score 21-23.  Harper went on to lose 22-25.  Cassie Schweikle (/Glenbard East), back on track, had 4 kills, and Rugile Jaciunas (/Wheeling H.S.) had 3 kills off the bench.  Jocelyn Mercado (/Schaumburg) was 7-7 serving.
 
In the third set there was a VERY long rally at 4-0.  Both teams were fighting hard for this set!  Harper went on to a 10-2 lead behind Natalia Smiech's (/Dundee-Crown) serving… then 20-7, for a 25-12 win.  Cassie Schweikle (/Glenbard East) had 4 more kills. Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) had 4 kills.  Taylor Pfaller (/St. Viator) and Daniela Pineda (/Buffalo Grove) each had 6 digs.  Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) and Vicky Gorny each had 5 digs in this 25-12 win. Taylor Pfaller (/St. Viator) was 6-6 serving with 2 aces.  And Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) was 6-7 serving.
 
The forth set was another barnburner.  Harper led 5-3, then 9-6, 10-7, 12-9, 14-11 and 16-13 before finally gathering a seemingly commanding 19-13 lead.  But Southwestern Illinois had other ideas, and tied the score  at 22-22!  But at 24-24, Southwestern Illinois had a double hit called, and then hit one barely out of bounds for a 26-24 Harper win.  Cassie Schweikle (/Glenbard East) had yet another 4 kills for match-high 12 kills.  Daniela Pineda (/Buffalo Grove) added 10 more digs, while Taylor Pfaller (/St. Viator) had 6 digs.  Taylor Pfaller (/St. Viator) was 5-5 serving with 2 aces.

D3 #3 Harper College defeated Lake Michigan 27-25, 24-26, 25-14, 27-25

Joliet, IL 9/12/2021:  Speaking of barn-burners!  In the first set, Harper fell behind a talented Lake Michigan team 6-9.  Harper tied the score at 11-11, 12-12, 13-13 and 14-14 before taking a slim 17-14 lead… then 18-15 and 20-17. Unfortunately for Harper, Lake Michigan then tied the score at 20-20, and 21-21. Harper took a slim 23-22 lead, but Lake Michigan tied the score again at 24-24 and 25-25, before Harper win 27-25.  Cassie Schweikle (/Glenbard East) had 5 kills.  Birthday girl Patricia Wadas (/Hoffman Estates) had 4 kills on her first 4 swings.  Vicky Gorny added 4 kills on a bunch of attack attempts.  Taylor Pfaller (/St. Viator) had 7 digs.  Katie Hofmann (/Elk Grove) was 8-8 serving with 2 aces.
 
In the second set, Harper had a 10-5 lead, and extended the lead to 13-5.  With help from another random double-hit call this time on Harper's setter, Lake Michigan closed the set to 13-10, and then 15-12 before tying the set at 17-17.  Harper jumped ahead a bit to 20-18, 21-19 but …  lost 24-26.  Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) led Harper with 4 kills on her bunch of attack attempts in this set.  Alyssa Rodda (/Barrington) had 7 digs, Vicky Gorny had 7 digs, Jules Carusiello (/Hersey H.S.) had 6 digs, and Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) had 5 digs.  Alyssa Rodda (/Barrington) was 6-7 serving.
 
In set three, Harper jumped ahead 5-2, 9-3, 14-6, 17-11, 20-13 and 22-14 before winning 25-14.  Vicky Gorny and Katie Hofmann (/Elk Grove) each had 3 kills.  Jules Carusiello (/Hersey H.S.) had 9 digs in this set.  Katie Hofmann (/Elk Grove) was 5-6 serving with an ace.
 
In the final set, Harper fell behind 5-8, but caught up at 13-13.  There was another tie at 18-18.  Had Harper let the ball fly out of bounds instead of playing it, Harper would have been ahead 19-17.  Harper then extended to 21-19.  There was a VERY long rally at 22-19;  then 23-20, 23-21  and a tie at 23-23.  With Harper ahead 24-23, Harper missed a crucial serve to tie the score at 24-24. Harper won the next point but another tie at 25-25 ensued.  Harper won the last 2 points to win the set 27-25, and the match.  Vicky Gorny led Harper with 4 kills on even more attack attempts.  Jules Carusiello (/Hersey H.S.) added 10 more digs for a match high 28 digs.   Taylor Pfaller (/St. Viator) was 6-6 serving with 3 aces, and Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) was 6-6 serving with an ace.  Good time for some aces in this tight set and match. 

D3 #3 Harper College defeated D2 Lansing 25-15, 25-14, 17-25, 25-20 

Joliet, IL:  Harper started out with a commanding 7-1 lead. But Lansing came charging back at 8-7.  Harper extended again to 19-10 on the was to a 25-15 win.  Vicky Gorny led Harper with 5 kills.  Vicky Gorny had 6 digs, and Jules Carusiello (/Hersey H.S.) had 5 digs.  Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) was 7-8 serving with 4 aces. 
 
In the second set, Harper started out ahead 8-6, then 10-6, 11-7, 12-8… and extended to 19-9 by simply playing well… Harper then led 22-12 and won 25-14.  Vicky Gorny led Harper with 5 more kills.  Cassie Schweikle (/Glenbard East) added 3 kills and 2 blocks.  Jocelyn Mercado (/Schaumburg) had 7 digs… Daniela Pineda (/Buffalo Grove) had 5 digs, and Vicky Gorny had 5 digs.  Naalia Smiech was 5-6 serving. 
 
In the third set, the score was tied at 4-4 and 7-7, before Lansing took over… 10-11, 14-20, and a 17-25 Harper loss.  Vicky Gorny and Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) each had 3 kills.  Natalia Smiech (/Dundee-Crown) led Harper with 4 digs.  Katie Hofmann (/Elk Grove) was 5-5 serving with 2 aces.
 
The final set was a very close affair.  There were ties at 2-2, 6-6, 9-9, 10-10, 11-11, 12-12 and 13-13, before Harper had a slim lead at 15-13.  Then 17-15, 20-17 and a 25-20 win.  Vicky Gorny continued her pace by adding 4 more kills.  Rugile Jaciunas (/Wheeling H.S.) added 3 kill and 2 blocks.  And Cassie Schweikle (/Glenbard East) added 3 kills.  Jules Carusiello (/Hersey H.S.) led Harper with 6 digs.  Natalie Smiech was 5-5 serving with an ace. 
 
 
For the tournament, Outside Hitter Vicky Gorny was named to the Joliet Invitational All-Tournament team.  Vicky led Harper College with 49 kills (3.27 kills/set), plus had 45 digs (3.0 digs/set), 5 blocks, 4 aces while serving 90%, 3 assists, played 2 days, and earned one All-Tournament award.
