Harper Volleyball LOST to Milwaukee

Palatine, IL: In the first set, Harper jumped out in front at 5-1, extended to 11-5, 15-8, 20-15 for a well-executed 25-16 win. Outside Hitters Ava Belluomini led Harper with 4 kills and Regina Anelli had 3 kills. Cana Jones was 6-6 serving with 2 aces, and Anelli was 5-5 serving with an ace.

The second set was a different animal… There were many ties at 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10… Harper had a brief 17-14 edge, but alas, more ties at 17-17, 18-18, before Milwaukee pulled away 18-20, on the way to a 24-26 win. Taylor Knuth had 10 kills, in between some excellent Milwaukee blocking. Stacy Maimur (Wheeling/Stevenson H.S.) added 3 kills. Anelli was 7-7 serving with 2 aces, while Jones was 5-5 serving and an ace.

In the 3rd set, the score was tied at 3-3 and 4-4, but behind some slick serving from Anelli, Harper took a 12-4 lead. After a couple missed served, Harper maintained the 13-6 and 14-7 leads and even extended to 20-10 on the way to a 25-18 win. Knuth unloaded for 9 kills in this 3rd set. Anelli was on-fire with 9-9 serving and an ace.

In the fourth set, there were ties again at 2-2, 7-7, 8-8 and 10-10 when Harper lost its grip at 11-16, 14-20 and lost 16-25. Knuth had another spectacular 8 kills. Anelli was 7-7 serving with 2 aces.

In the fifth and final set, Harper fell right away at 3-6 and then 3-8 at the side switch. Harper just couldn't close the gap, or dig any hits for that matter on the way to a 9-14 loss, from a much improved and spirited Milwaukee team. Harper only had 4 kills in this final deciding set. Anelli FINALLY missed her 30th serve after 29 straight serves in this match. The all-time record for most Harper College serves in a match is held by Lindsey Murphy with 35 serves, against Rock Valley back in 2014.

Knuth ended the match with 28 kills, which ties Harper's all-time Kills record held by Ellie Burzlaff back in 2017. The setter that year was our current Harper Volleyball Assistant Coach Emily Huprich. Knuth also had a pretty healthy 17 digs in this match for yet another double-double. Anelli was close behind with 15 digs.

Harper Volleyball has now LOST 8, five-set matches this year.

Final Regular season matches will be Saturday at Triton College. Harper players Triton at 10:00 a.m., and Olive Harvey at Noon.

Next week, the Regional playoffs start. The Region meeting is Sunday, October 22. We will know the schedule after that.
