Late Offense Earns Busse, Hawks the Victory

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Harper College baseball team scored in each of the last five innings to win their second straight game on Tuesday, topping Vincennes University 9-4.

Held scoreless through four innings and trailing by a run, Mark Sarti (Palatine, Ill., Palatine) led off the inning with a walk.  John Caravia (Norridge, Ill., Ridgewood) then singled to send Sarti to third, and Nick Spagnola (Algonquin, Ill., Dundee-Crown) got the Hawks on the board with a sacrifice fly to right.

Harper struck for three more runs in the sixth as Andrew Skinner (Lyons, Ill., St. Joseph) singled and Kevin Robinson (Schaumburg, Ill., Conant) put two men in scoring position with none out after his double.  Connor McHugh (Hoffman Estates, Ill., Schaumburg) did his job with a RBI groundout, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead.  With two outs, Brett Sklena (Skokie, Ill., Niles North) tripled to score Robinson and Sarti brought in Sklena with a base hit.

The Hawks struck for single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.  Robinson scored Caravia with a single and in the following inning, Sarti brought home Sklena with a single.

Ryan Busse (Prospect Heights, Ill., Hersey) earned the victory, going eight innings before giving way to Scott Plaza (Arlington Heights, Ill., Prospect).  Busse gave up three runs to earn his second victory of the season.

Up next, the Hawks will play the final game of their spring trip against Olney College.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.  The team, however, will still have one more game on the road upon returning to the Chicago area, as they will take on Prairie State College on Thursday.
