CICERO, Ill. – Nine different players registered hits and the Harper College baseball team cranked out 16 hits in all to roll to their third straight victory 18-8 over Morton College.
Held scoreless for three innings and trailing by two runs, the Hawks dominated the final six innings.
Nickolas Johnson (Chicago, Ill., Simeon) started off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single by
Mark Sarti (Palatine, Ill., Palatine).
Nick Spagnola (Algonquin, Ill., Dundee-Crown) plated the team's first run with a single.
Connor McHugh (Hoffman Estates, Ill., Schaumburg) doubled to drive in two runs and he eventually scored on a passed ball.
Harper added three more runs in the fifth as Sarti got the squad going with a hit by pitch. After
John Caravia (Norridge, Ill., Ridgewood) reached on an error, McHugh drove in another run with a base hit.
Kevin Robinson (Schaumburg, Ill., Conant) got hit by a pitch to load the bases before
Dan Duran (Skokie, Ill., Niles West) walked to force in Caravia. McHugh then scored on another wild pitch to make it 7-2 in favor of the Hawks.
Once Morton pulled within 7-6, Harper really put some distance between themselves and the hosts. Walks to Duran and
Brett Sklena (Skokie, Ill., Niles North) started the inning. With two outs,
Mark Sarti (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) singled to drive home Duran and Sklena scored soon after on a wild pitch. Spagnola reached via base on balls and Caravia drove both baserunners home with a triple. McHugh continued the two-out scoring spree with a double to plate Caravia. McHugh capped the six-run inning during which all runs were scored with two outs by crossing the plate on a wild pitch.
Up 13-7 in the eighth inning, the Hawks added some insurance. Duran led off with his second home run of the season. After two flyouts,
Ricky Janokowicz (Carol Stream, Ill., Glenbard North) doubled and later scored on an error. McHugh drove home two more later in the inning with a single.
Ryan Guthrie (Chillicothe, Mo., Chillicothe) added a two-run double in the ninth inning to set the Hawks season-high in runs.
Greg Fox (Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South) tossed six innings and gave up six runs to earn the win. Fox struck out a season-high ten hitters while yielding just five hits.
Ryne Kush (Barrington, Ill., Barrington) threw three innings to earn the save.
McHugh drove in five runs in all and also had four hits and three runs scored. Caravia, Duran, Guthrie and Sarti also produced multi-hit efforts for the Hawks.
