Robinson, Guthrie Drive Hawks to Victory

PALATINE, Ill. – The Harper College baseball team brought out the bats on Tuesday afternoon, combining for 25 runs in just 12 innings at the plate in a double-header sweep over Waubonsee Community College.  The Hawks took game one 14-5 and won game two 11-1 in five innings.

Kevin Robinson (Schaumburg, Ill., Conant) smacked two home runs in game one and drove in eight runs on the day while Ryan Guthrie (Chillicothe, Mo., Chillicothe) plated five more in the opening game as the Hawks scored double digit runs in both ends of a double-header for the first time this season.

After Waubonsee (17-33) inched ahead 1-0 in the first, Harper (18-20, 5-3 N4C) responded with six runs in the home half.  Nick Spagnola (Algonquin, Ill., Dundee-Crown) got it started with a single and moved up to second on a walk to John Caravia (Norridge, Ill., Ridgewood) before a Dan Duran (Skokie, Ill., Niles West) single loaded up the bases with no outs.  Robinson scored two with his base hit and after a strikeout and a walk to Brett Sklena (Skokie, Ill., Niles North), the bases were loaded for Guthrie, who promptly cleared them with a double.  Spagnola eventually drove Guthrie in with a single.

The Chiefs added two more in the second but the Hawks responded again in the second.  With one out, Robinson homered.  Two walks set up Anthony Colosimo (Lake Forest, Ill., Loyola Academy) and he delivered a two-out run-scoring single to make it 8-3.

Robinson added his second home run in the third, a three-run shot that scored Caravia and Duran.  Spagnola's RBI single made it 12-3 in the fourth while Guthrie drove in two more in the fifth to set the final score.

Ricky Janokowicz (Carol Stream, Ill., Glenbard North) went the distance to earn the victory.  The right-hander gave up eight hits and five runs while striking out seven.  Spagnola had four hits and two RBI.

In the nightcap, Greg Fox (Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South) threw all five innings in a game called by run-rule to earn the win.  Fox, who struck out four and gave up four hits, surrendered a first inning run but that was all Waubonsee could muster off of the left-hander.

Duran made sure there would be no letdown in game two, singling in a run in the first to tie the game at 1-1 and adding a two-run home run in the fifth that ended the game.  Robinson contributed a two-run triple in the second and Connor McHugh (Hoffman Estates, Ill., Schaumburg) had a RBI double in the fourth.

Up next, the Hawks will face McHenry County College.  Thursday's game in Crystal Lake will start at 3:00 PM.
