Early Offense Enough for Hawks

PALATINE, Ill. – The Harper College baseball team didn't score after the third inning, but they managed just enough offense to muster out a 6-5 victory over Moraine Valley Community College.

Harper struck first in the home half of the opening inning.  With one out, John Caravia (Norridge, Ill., Ridgewood) singled.  A walk to Connor McHugh (Hoffman Estates, Ill., Schaumburg) put two men on for Kevin Robinson (Schaumburg, Ill., Conant) and a wild pitch eventually scored Caravia.  After Robinson walked, Dan Duran (Skokie, Ill., Niles West) came through with a base hit to score McHugh.

The Cyclones responded immediately with three in the second to pull in front but the Hawks put up another crooked number in the third inning thanks to four straight hits.  With one away, Nick Spagnola (Algonquin, Ill., Dundee-Crown) and McHugh posted back-to-back singles.  Robinson then doubled to drive in Spagnola and move to McHugh to third before Duran brought in both men with a double.

Greg Fox (Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South) notched the victory, tossing seven innings and surrendering five runs before giving way to Josh Daniels (Elk Grove, Ill., Elk Grove), who closed the game out with two shutout innings to earn the save.  Fox allowed only five hits while Daniels struck out the side in the ninth.

The Hawks play their next five games away from home, starting with tomorrow's non-conference tilt with Rockford College.  First pitch is slated for 3:00 PM.
