PALATINE, Ill. - The Harper College women's basketball game put forth one of their best defensive efforts in the first half, holding Madison College to 23% shooting before halftime. But a 14-0 run at the beginning of the second half doomed the Hawks in a xx-xx loss to WolfPack, the final regular season game of the 2012-13 season.
Rachel Payne (Wheeling, Ill., Schaumburg Christian Academy) paced the Hawks with 15 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Harper (10-13, 5-9 N4C) put the clamps on Madison in the first half, allowing the WolfPack to hit just six of their 26 first half shots. Trailing 17-8 midway through the first half, the Hawks quickly got themselves back in the game. Hinderer scored twice sandwiched around a driving basket from Soderholm to make it 17-14. After two free throws from Madison's Taylor Pfeuti, Soderholm found Hinderer for baskets on consecutive possessions to make it a 1-point game.
The turning point in the game came when Hinderer picked up her fourth foul with 2:28 left in the first half and the team trailing 19-18. Without the services of the 5-foot-11 center, Harper hung close as free throws from Payne and Soderholm helped the Hawks go into the halftime break down just 25-20.
The WolfPack, however, turned a 25-21 second half lead into a 43-23 advantage with 13:46 left. Calli Dahl, who scored a game-high 26 points, had four points and three assists during the stretch.
The Hawks tried to work their way back into the game as a 9-0 run cut the deficit to 11. Soderholm canned a jumper before Payne connected from long distance. Tiffany Jost (Hoffman Estates, Ill., Schaumburg) added a rebound and bucket before Sancha Ogden (Hanover Park, Ill., Hoffman Estates) capped the spurt with a free throw. But Madison countered with a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach.
In addition to Hinderer, Payne, Soderholm, Ogden and Jost all had at least five rebounds as the Hawks had a 39-38 advantage on the boards.
