PALATINE, Ill. –The seventh-ranked Harper College volleyball team posted a perfect 3-0 mark at its own invite on Saturday. The Hawks (23-7) defeated Moraine Valley Community College, Black Hawk College-East, and McHenry County College all in three sets.
Harper vs. Moraine Valley Community College
After a tightly-contested first set that Harper won 27-25, the Hawks went on win the match in three sets over the Cyclones (27-25, 25-17, 25-11). Alyssia Dugo (Algonquin, Ill. /Jacobs) paced the Harper offense with a team-high seven kills, and Lindsey Murphy (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake South) and Jillian Hoffman (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) each dished out 11 assists in the match.
Kim Butler (Palatine, Ill/Palatine) notched a team-high three blocks of the 10 Hawks team blocks. Libero Meghan Chartier (Inverness, Ill./Buffalo Grove) led the Hawks with 13 digs.
Harper vs. Black Hawk College-East
Harper picked up a three-set victory over Black Hawk (25-16, 25-17, 25-22) behind the strong play of Dugo and Hoffman. Dugo was 25-of-27 on the attack with a team-best 11 kills, and Hoffman recorded her eighth double-double of 2014 with 15 digs and 28 assists.
Kim Butler (Palatine, Ill/Palatine) and Sarah Bregenzer (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) put down seven kills and six kills, respectively, and Murphy served three aces on just seven service attempts. Chartier once again showed off her defensive skills with 16 digs.
Harper vs. McHenry County College
Each set of the Harper-McHenry match was decided by three points or less, with the Hawks narrowly edging the Scots in each set, 25-22, 25-23, and 28-26.
"Both teams played very well. This match was tense the entire time with every touch, every point, every pass, every hit and every serve being important," said Harper head coach Bob Vilsoet.
Hoffman once again starred for the Hawks with 12 digs and a season-best 35 assists. Lauren Sokolowski (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows) benefited from Hoffman's setting to the tune of 15 kills on just 23 attempts, and Dugo put down 11 kills to go with 12 digs. Chartier eclipsed the 20-dig mark with 21 digs in the final match of the day.
"Playing close games against quality teams is how a team improves greatly and quickly," Vilsoet said.
Hoffman and Chartier Named to All-Tournament Team
First-year setter Jillian Hoffman (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) and first-year libero Meghan Chartier (Inverness, Ill./Buffalo Grove) both earned spots on the Harper Volleyball Invite All-Tournament Team. Hoffman guided the offense with 74 assists, 34 digs, and two double-doubles in three matches. Chartier was key to the Hawks' defensive efforts, tallying 50 digs while going 29-of-30 serving with two aces.
This honor marks the first All-Tournament team of Hoffman's college career. Hoffman's sister, Jenny Hoffman, made the All-Tournament team at the Harper College Invite back in 2004 as a player for Oakton Community College. Chartier has been named to an All-Tournament team three times now (College of DuPage 19th Annual Classic, Harper Invitational, Harper Invite).

"This was a fun tournament. I believe our team benefited from the competition that we faced and hopefully toughened us up a little bit more," he said. "In that last match against McHenry, although it was a close match, I felt like our team played together again like that symphony we are always trying to be like. Everybody played their parts."
