Box Score 4 All-Tournament Team and Results
GLEN ELLYN, Ill. – The Harper College volleyball team won its first three matches at the College of DuPage 19th Annual Classic over the weekend before losing to No. 1 Madison College in the championship match to take second place in the nine-team tournament.
"We are very proud of our accomplishments this weekend. We are truly a strong team ourselves, but still with a lot more potential," said Harper head coach Bob Vilsoet.
Harper vs. College of Lake County
In Friday's opener, the Hawks (3-1) earned a straight-set victory over College of Lake County (25-19, 25-9, 25-12). Lauren Sokolowski (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows) and Adriana Loiacono (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) both put down six kills apiece to lead a balanced Hawks attack. Lindsey Murphy (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake South) (22-of-24, seven aces) and Daniele Sortino (Elk Grove Village, Ill. /Elk Grove) (18-of-18, four aces) starred in the service game while Mia Harper (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows) led the Hawks defensively with 11 digs. Murphy also led the Hawks in assists with 20.
"We started this match a little slow but began to play better very quickly. Murph and Daniele Sortino (Elk Grove Village, Ill. /Elk Grove) were superb serving, while Mia Harper (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows) played an outstanding game at libero," Vilsoet said.
Harper vs. Ancilla College
On Friday night, the Hawks earned a four-set victory (25-19, 25-14, 24-26, 31-29) over a strong Ancilla College team. Sokolowski once again led the Harper attack with nine kills while Sortino (18-of-18, three aces) served another strong game.
Defensively, Harper totaled 102 digs, led by libero Meghan Chartier (Inverness, Ill./Buffalo Grove)'s 23 digs. Murphy recorded a double-double with 18 assists to go along with 16 digs, and fellow setter Jillian Hoffman (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) tallied 18 assists in the win.
"Our defense was 'on' this match, averaging over 25 digs per set, which is very good," Vilsoet said.
Harper vs. Moraine Valley Community College
Harper played well in its Saturday morning match against Moraine Valley with a sweep of the Cyclones, 25-15, 25-16, 25-17.
Loiacono paced the Hawks with seven kills while Murphy served another strong game (21-of-22, one ace) and tallied a team-high 18 assists.
"Moraine Valley is traditionally a strong team. This was a strong win," Vilsoet said.
Harper vs. No. 1 Madison College
The Hawks faced off against Madison in the final match of the weekend and fell in straight sets (10-25, 19-25, 25-27) as the WolfPack played their best match of the weekend. Sortino led the Hawks with seven kills, Chartier totaled 16 digs and Murphy handed out 10 assists.
