Harper Takes Both Matches at Illinois Valley

OGLESBY, Ill. – The Harper College volleyball team defeated both Elgin Community College and Illinois Valley Community College at the Illinois Valley Tri-Match on Saturday.

Harper vs. Elgin Community College

Despite dropping the first game, the Hawks (12-4) topped Elgin in four games (17-25, 25-18, 25-9, 25-15). Lindsey Murphy (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake South) (13 digs, 19 assists) and Lauren Sokolowski (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows) (11 kills, 14 digs) each notched double-doubles.

Libero Meghan Chartier (Inverness, Ill./Buffalo Grove) led the team with 20 digs and starred in the service game, going 26-of-26 with four aces. Middle hitter Kim Butler (Palatine, Ill/Palatine) hindered Elgin's attack, as she totaled four blocks to go along with five kills. Adriana Loiacono (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) put down a season-high nine kills in the victory.

"Elgin played very well in this match. We had to adjust our lineup after the first set," said Harper head coach Bob Vilsoet. "Fortunately, we made the right adjustments."

Harper vs. Illinois Valley Community College

With their backs against the wall after dropping the first two sets to host Illinois Valley, the Hawks responded to win the final three sets in a thrilling match against the Eagles, 24-26, 24-26, 25-21, 25-17, 15-11.

Four Hawks notched double-doubles in the match, led by Morgan Peterson (Roselle, Ill./Conant ) with 14 kills and 21 digs, including nine kills in the final two sets. Sokolowski put down 11 kills and added 25 digs, and Murphy contributed 14 digs and 22 assists. Setter Jillian Hoffman (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) had 11 digs to go along with a season-high 28 assists.

"As a team, we are improving greatly. We had to make the right adjustments to win the last three sets in a row," Vilsoet said. "Illinois Valley played well in this match and truly stretched us."
