Hawks Recognize Sophs in Final Home Game

PALATINE, Ill. – It was a bittersweet night in the Wellness & Sports Center at Harper College on Wednesday evening. On one hand, the Harper College women's basketball program saw its sophomores play their final home game. On the other hand, the coaching staff, teammates, parents, and fans took the time to honor a seven-player sophomore class prior to the game against Milwaukee Area Technical College.

Fueled by strong second and fourth quarters, the Stormers (15-12, 7-4 N4C) picked up a 79-36 road victory over the Hawks (4-22, 0-11 N4C). Milwaukee led 12-10 after one but scored 28 second quarter points to lead 40-21 at halftime. The Stormers turned up the defense in the second half, allowing only 15 Harper points while scoring 27 points alone in the fourth quarter.

Harper College head women's basketball coach Jenny Turpel started five of her six sophomores eligible to play in the contest: Nastia Solsaa (Menomonie, Wis. /Menomonie ), Kim Herzog (/Buffalo Grove), Sarah Nelson (Gurnee, Ill. /Warren Township ), Ashonte Sims (Bloomington, Ill. /Normal Community West), and Lane Winkler (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows). Sophomore Shannon Koch (Mount Prospect, Ill. /Prospect) also saw action in the game.

Here are the sophomore player highlights from the game:
Nastia Solsaa (Menomonie, Wis. /Menomonie )
The guard had a solid all-around game, as she had three points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block in 26 minutes. Solsaa's 3-pointer came with 5:41 to play in the third quarter.
 
Kim Herzog (/Buffalo Grove)
The point guard, who is the Hawks' current leading scorer, scored a team-high 14 points in 36 minute. Herzog was 5-of-14 from the floor and also had a rebound, two assists, and five steals.
 
Sarah Nelson (Gurnee, Ill. /Warren Township )
In 26 minutes of action, Nelson knocked down two 3-pointers and finished with six points, two rebounds, and two steals.
 
Ashonte Sims (Bloomington, Ill. /Normal Community West)
Despite being limited to 19 minutes due to foul trouble, the forward grabbed four rebounds and had an assist.
 
Lane Winkler (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows)
In her 31 minutes, Winkler finished with two points, five rebounds, and a team-high four assists.
 
Shannon Koch (Mount Prospect, Ill. /Prospect)
Koch missed her only 3-pointer of the game. She entered the game for the first time at the 4:02 mark in the first quarter.  
 
As a team, the Hawks struggled from the field, shooting just 22.4 percent (13-of-58). Harper committed 29 turnovers. The Stormers shot 47.1 percent (33-of-70). Tara Jefferson led the team with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds. Moriah Begin contributed across the board with 15 points, eight rebounds, nine assists, and five steals.
 
Harper wraps up the regular season with a trip to No. 5 Madison College (24-3, 8-3 N4C) on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 1 PM in the H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium.
