Palatine, Ill- The Harper College volleyball team, with a win in straight sets on Thursday, remained perfect on the season. The Hawks (22-0, 8-0 N4C) defeated Joliet Junior College for the second time in 2016, boosting their North Central Community College (N4C) record to 8-0.
Harper dominated the first set winning 25-9. Tied at 3-3 early on, the Hawks broke open the set on quality serving from
Katelyn Sommers (/Buffalo Grove) (8-8, 1 ace), and relentless attacking from
Ellie Burzlaff (/Harvest Christian) (5 kills).
The second set was knotted 11-11 before Harper, buoyed by
Katelyn Sommers (/Buffalo Grove) serving (13-14, 5 aces), was able to gain a 22-12 advantage. The final tally would be 25-13.
Kayla Mayer (/Wauconda) and
Hannah Moore (/Schaumburg) added 5 digs apiece, in the set.
The Hawks were up 14-4 in the third set, before Joliet fought back to pull within 1 point at 21-20 forcing a rare Harper timeout. After regrouping, the Hawks outscored Joliet 4-1 down the stretch, winning the set 25-22.
Ariana Chelini (/Crystal Lake South) was strong in the service game for the Hawks going 13-13.
Next up for the No.1 Hawks is the Harper College Invite. The host Hawks will play four games on Saturday beginning at 10AM with McHenry County College (19-10). They will then play at 12PM, 2PM, and 4PM against Rock Valley (7-11, 3-5 N4C), Black Hawk College-Moline(4-13), and Elgin Community College (4-10), respectively. Harper has defeated Rock Valley twice and Elgin once already in 2016.
