Box Score PALATINE, IL-Â The Harper College women's basketball team got their first win of the season last night when they beat the Olive-Harvey College Panthers 42-32.
The first quarter of play got off to a slow start as both teams combined for 4 turnovers and 8 missed shots before
Carrie Kerlin took a pass from
Sydney Heinrich and hit a jumper from the wing for the first 2 points of the game. Olive-Harvey would get on the board for the first time 5 minutes into the quarter after a Hawk turnover led to an easy transition layup. The Panthers would then take a 6-5 lead but it was short-lived as
Maggie O'Donnell hit a three to make the score 8-6 Hawks. The lead would extend to 11-6 before the Panthers hit a three as time expired in the first quarter.
The second quarter would see another 3 minute scoring drought before the Panthers hit two free throws with 7:13 to go to tie the game. Heinrich would answer back a
Ashley Shapiro made a nice pass and Heinrich finished with a layup. The teams would trade leads back and forth until Shapiro and
Kathryn Pielmeier hit back to back layups for a 19-15 lead. However, the Panthers would go on a streak of their own, hitting two straight to tie the game at 19 each going into the half.
Olive-Harvey started out the second half where they finished the first and scored the first 6 points for a 25-19 lead. Shapiro put the scoring drought to rest as she hit 2 free throws with 5 minutes to go in the third. Two more Shapiro free throws and a layup from
Mikayla Drake brought the score back tied at 25. With 3 minutes remaining,
Kaela Drum hit a nice jump shot on a pass from O'Donnell to give the Hawks their first lead of the half at 29-27. The two teams would again trade baskets and end the third quarter with a 31-31 tie.
The Hawks fast-paced offense would then takeover in the fourth quarter as the team allowed the Panthers to score only one point in the last 11:13 going back to the end of the third. After trading free throws, Drake and Heinrich would hit jumpers to bring the Hawks ahead 37-32. Acting as point guard due to foul trouble, Kaela Drum all but sealed the game with a 3-pointer with just under 4 minutes to go. Ashley Shapiro put the game on ice with a steal on one end of the court and finished with a layup on the other, giving the Hawks a 42-32 win.
Shapiro, an All-Area and All-Conference player at Palatine, finished with a double-double and game-highs in points (18) and steals (7) while also pulling down 10 rebounds. Sydney Heinrich led both teams with 3 assists while Mikayla Drake and
Jasmin Carrillo each had a block.
The Hawks (1-1) will travel to Iowa City on Friday to take on Ellsworth Community College at 6pm then play North Iowa Community College Saturday at 11am.
