Early Lead Not Enough for Hawks

Box Score PALATINE, IL-  The Harper College women's basketball team hosted the Madison College WolfPack at Robert Morris to continue N4C play on Wednesday.  Despite jumping out to an early lead in the first quarter, the Hawks ended up falling 76-56.

The two teams got off to a quick start as they essentially traded baskets for the first five and half minutes of the game.  With the score tied at 11 with 4:36 to go,  the Hawks were able to build a four-point lead on a layup by Angelina Villasin and two free throws by Ashley Shapiro.  Harper held the lead with 1:42 remaining in the first, but Madison scored the next four points to end the quarter.  The second quarter was a complete shift from the first quarter pace, as both teams began the quarter scoreless for almost 3 minutes.  Kaela Drum brought the Madison lead to 3 with 6:40 to go in the half, but the WolfPack extended their lead to 7 before Drum hit a three pointer to keep the Hawks in striking distance with 5:10 remaining.  However, that would be the last time the Hawks would score for the half and went into halftime facing a 34-20 deficit.  Harper shot a rough 2-14 from the field in the second and missed all three free throws to help Madison grow their lead.

The Hawks were able to bring the WolfPack lead down to 8 after back to back three pointers by Villasin and Sydney Heinrich, but Madison caught fire and made their next 9 field goals.  Madison's hot shooting, coupled with Harper's turnovers and missed layups allowed the lead to grow to 62-41 in Madison's favor.  Harper was able to keep the deficit from growing through the final period but could not extend a run to get any closer than 19 points.  The pace slowed for the rest of the game, sending Harper to their second consecutive loss with a 76-56 final score.

As has been the case in most of the Hawks' losses this year, poor shooting and turnovers dug the Hawks into a hole they could not get out of.  For the game, Harper shot 35% and only 44% from the free throw line while committing 16 turnovers.  Angelina Villasin led the team with 18 points and Ashley Shapiro recorded her third straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kaela Drum added 13 points, including three three-pointers.

The Hawks fell to 5-12 overall and 2-3 in N4C play.  Next up, the Hawks will travel to Joliet to face the Joliet Junior College Wolves on Saturday.  Tip-off is scheduled for 1pm.
