Box Score PALATINE, IL- The Harper College women's basketball team traveled to Rockford on Saturday to take on the defending champion Rock Valley Golden Eagles. In a game where the final score did not tell the whole story, the Hawks fell 85-36.
The game got off to an auspicious start for the Hawks as a technical foul was assessed before tip-off due to a scoring table blunder. The Golden Eagles made good on the pair of free throws and the Hawks started the game down 2-0. The Hawks, only playing with 5 players due to injuries, dug out of the early hole and led the #3 RVC team 12-10 with 3 minutes to go in the first quarter. Freshman
Kaela Drum dominated post play early, scoring the Hawks' first six points from the paint. At the end of the first quarter the Hawks found themselves down 14-13. To open the second however, the Golden Eagles turned up the full court pressure and the Hawks could not consistently break it, seeing a multitude of bad passes and 10-second calls. Harper did not score their first points until 4 minutes into the quarter and finished the second with only seven shots. Heading into the break, the Hawks were down 36-17 with 21 turnovers.
The third quarter saw more of the same as Harper once again could not adjust to the press by Rock Valley. A combination of bad passes and touch fouls when on defense slowed the pace down greatly for the Hawks as they were outscored in the third quarter 30-8. The Hawks did show signs of life in the fourth, however, putting up 11 points and took better care of the ball. As time expired, the Hawks lost by a score of 85-36 in a game that could have been much different.
Because of the turnovers, the Hawks were only able to get off 38 total shots in the game. Bright spots were the freshmen
Kaela Drum (14 points, 8 rebounds) and
Ashley Shapiro (11 points, 11 rebounds).
The Hawks (4-12, 1-1 N4C) will play host to the College of DuPage Chapparals on Wednesday at Robert Morris University, the 2018 home of the Harper Hawks.
