Tale of Two Halves as Hawks Lose to Golden Eagles

Box Score PALATINE, IL-  The Harper College women's basketball team finished their season series against the defending national champion Rock Valley College Golden Eagles on Wednesday.  In a game where the Hawks trailed by 6 at half time, the second half slipped into an eventual 94-55 loss.

In the first meeting against the Golden Eagles, the shorthanded Hawks committed 42 turnovers and lost by 49 points.  This game started off completely different as the Hawks appeared to make adjustments to RVC's game plan.  Harper was actually able to get multiple three point leads in the quarter, but at the end of the first ten minutes of play they trailed 18-12.  The Golden Eagles were able to extend their lead to 10 early in the second, but baskets by Angelina Villasin and Ashley Shapiro were able to trim the lead to 4 with 2:23 remaining in the half.  Rock Valley was able to hit back to back shots to go up by 8 before Carrie Kerlin hit a corner jumper as the half closed to keep the Hawks within 6.

Despite needing to make only a couple adjustments against one of the top teams in the conference, the Hawks were not able to capitalize and the second half quickly got out of hand.  In the first three minutes, the Golden Eagles were able to expand the lead to 15 as Harper only made one shot and committed a few costly turnovers.  Throughout the third quarter, the Hawks shot a low 38.5% from the field while missing 4 free throws.  Rock Valley countered by shooting 62.5% from the floor while connecting on 5 threes.  The fourth quarter was more of the same as RVC continued to get easy looks while bullying the Hawks in the paint for offensive rebounds and easy looks.  After only connecting on 2 three pointers in the first half, RVC bounced back to hit 10 threes in the last two quarters.  Their three point field goals actually outscored the entire Hawks' offense in the second half.  As the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard showed 94-55 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

Harper shot a respectable 42% of the game but were only able to get off 52 total shots compared to RVC's 75.  The Hawks were also outrebounded by the bigger Golden Eagles 39-27, including a 15-7 deficit on the offensive glass.  On a positive note, the Hawks were not phased by the full court press in this game as they committed "only" 23 turnovers.  Abbey Sloan was able to provide a spark off the bench and put up an efficient 11 points in 29 minutes.  Kerlin kept her shooting streak going as she went 4-6 from the field for another 8 points.

In yet another game where the final score did not tell the whole story, the Hawks ended up falling to 3-6 in conference and 6-17 overall.  Up next for the Hawks should be a potential bounce back game as they take on the College of DuPage Chaparrals in Glen Ellyn on Saturday.  In their first meeting this year, the Hawks worked their way to a 68-32 victory.
