Box Score PALATINE, IL-Â The Harper College women's basketball team traveled to Glen Ellyn on Saturday and put together a strong team performance to defeat the College of DuPage Chaparrals 71-51.
The fast-paced Harper offense attacked with their strength from the opening tip as freshman guard
Abbey Sloan took off straight to the hoop and finished the layup 9 seconds into the game. The Hawks would go on to lead for the remaining 39:51 of the game. Freshman
Kaela Drum would be involved in the Hawks' next 5 points as she took a Sloan pass straight up for a nice hook shot. Drum, who got fouled on the play and converted the and-one, would pay back Sloan as she hit the speedy Sloan cutting to the basket for a layup. With just under 6 minutes to go in the first, Sloan would then have an and-one of her own to put the Hawks up 10-0. After the first quarter, the Hawks led 16-9. The Sloan and Drum show continued in the second quarter as the duo combined to score the Hawk's next 8 points and build a 24-13 lead. Giving the Hawks some fresh legs off the bench, freshman guard
Taylor Gunn scored 7 points in two and a half minutes and
Allie Osorio added on a three pointer giving the Hawks a 38-23 lead going into the half.
Sophomore guard
Angelina Villasin would get more involved in the second half as she either scored or assisted on the Hawks' first 10 points. Gunn also kept up the scoring, making aggressive drives to the basket and capping off the team's third quarter scoring with a three to build an 18 point lead heading into the last quarter. Harper was able to build the lead to as many as 27 throughout the fourth, which included jumpers from
Sydney Heinrich and
Carrie Kerlin . Two more Sloan free throws would finish off the scoring for the Hawks as they finished the season sweep of COD with a 71-51 win.
Harper had four players finish with double-digit ponits, led by Villasin's 20. Gunn was able to add a career-high 14 points in just 25 minutes off the bench, while going 2-2 from the free throw line and from three. She also added 2 steals and 3 rebounds. Drum tallied her third double-double of the year, finishing the game with 11 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. Sloan scored in double-digits for the third straight game, using her speed to hit gaps and get to the basket at will. Her and Drum also led the team with 5 assists.
With the win, the Hawks move up to a 6th place tie in the N4C with Triton College. The Hawks will host the Trojans on Thursday in what looks to be another good game. In their first meeting on January 13, the shorthanded Hawks fell 73-50.
